Karamea Waste Working Group Community Update

The Waste Working Group meets occasionally to discuss issues related to the Karamea Landfill.

One of its main functions is to provide advice to the Buller District Council about the amount of rates it thinks is required to manage the landfill each year. We then make a recommendation to council and council sets a targeted rate for ratepayers in the Karamea area.

This year (July 2016 – June 2017) the rates have stayed the same as the last two years. We are even hoping to be able to have some funds in hand to begin building a resource centre on site during 2017. It is hoped that the building will be constructed with at least some reused items.

We have a stable working group which is unchanged since its inception, except for the addition of Sheryl Rhind who came on board when she was a councillor, and who has remained in the group.

Recently, a visitor to Rongo, Nicky Pang, has also joined the group. He brings professional design qualifications to the group and is committed to reduce, reuse, and recycling principles. He is currently in Kaikoura, assisting the Innovative Waste Kaikoura get back on its feet after their earthquake. When Nicky gets back to Karamea, he will be concentrating on the design and drawings for the resource shed.

The working group is: Sheryl Rhind, Peter Langford, Brian Jones, Paul Murray, Tim Hawley, Shona Eason Gibson, Nicky Pang and Hamish Macbeth.
