Oparara Wilderness Trail Run - 7th March 2017 Update

Submitted by Radek on Tue, 07/03/2017 - 4:48pm

Time is ticking along now and we have only seven weeks left until race day on the 22nd of April and I would like to thank all those people who have volunteered their time to help on the day, the response has been fantastic.

Noel and I recently spent the day in Westport at the Buller Gorge Marathon sitting behind the scenes at the finish line observing how it was all done and it was impressive to see how the Westport community pulled together to make sure the event ran smooth and efficiently.
The electronic timing equipment which we will be using here for the Oparara Wilderness Trail Run is very sophisticated and it will be a great asset for us to have here.
I was invited to present a main spot prize on behalf of the Oparara Valley Trust and the Karamea Village Hotel so while doing this I took the opportunity to promote the Oparara Wilderness Trail Run and consequently that night we received four entries from the BGM.

The Karamea Events Trust committee also took the opportunity to promote our race by having our poster included in each competitor’s race pack at the Old Ghost Road Ultra two weeks ago and as a result we have received another two entries.

Dennis Straker, James Graham (web designer for our registration page) and four others from the Buller Gorge Marathon team will be here in Karamea for the weekend of the 22nd of April to give us a hand with the race.
Four helpers from the BGM team will be staying in Karamea on Friday the 21st April so if anyone in the community has a spare room and would like to offer these people a bed for the night and don’t mind these people having an early start next morning, I would be very grateful as this will leave the accommodation venues in town free for any competitors who still wish to enter.
If you are able to help with this, please contact me by phoning 7826773 or 027 465 1609.

To date we have had 83 confirmed entries and I feel sure that we will reach 100 before entries close on the 26th of March and it’s also great to see some local competition on the competitor‘s list as well.
Brian Corner is doing a fantastic job helping me run the Facebook page and keeping the website up to date. Brian and I have been running regular Facebook ads to help with the promotion of the event and there has been a very good response to this.
We have received five entries from Wellington, one from Timaru, one from the USA, several from Christchurch, Nelson, Marlborough, Golden Bay, Motueka, Westport and yesterday I had an enquiry from someone on Waiheke Island.

This will be the last newsletter that you will receive from me prior to the 2017 race and as many of these competitors and supporters have never been to Karamea before I would just like to reiterate from my earlier newsletters for all of us to make a huge effort to really turn this event on and show these people some true West Coast hospitality. You never know when they might return if we send them away with some great memories of Karamea.
