Does anyone know when the new installed Cell Tower on South Terrace is going to be activated?

Re: Karamea Cell Tower Upgrade

I got in touch with Community Relations at Vodafone who have given me this response (June 16th):

The tower under construction on the outskirts of Karamea is part of the Governments Rural Broadband Initiative. Vodafone is in the process of completing their build work of the Karamea tower and is now dependent on Buller Electricity to provide the power connection and Chorus to provide the fibre connection to the tower. The tower cannot go live without these two vital inputs. Buller Electricity and Chorus are working together to upgrade the power route in order for the fibre to be delivered via upgraded power poles. The date the tower goes live is dependent on how soon the work by Buller Electricity and Chorus to upgrade the route can be completed. At this stage Chorus have advised that this will be November 2014 but as soon as the fibre arrives Vodafone will be in a position to make the tower live.

The Rural Broadband Initiative (RBI) is the government's commitment to creating a significant and long term improvement in rural telecommunications infrastructure and services to rural New Zealand. The government’s key objectives for rural New Zealand are to target schools connectivity and to provide community broadband coverage. The government targets for RBI are:

  • · Ultra-fast broadband to 93 percent of rural schools (serving 99.7 percent of New Zealand students).
  • · Providing coverage to 80% of rural households with a minimum peak speed of 5Mbps or better.
  • · Provision of open access infrastructure to allow competition to the rural market

Vodafone is responsible for the delivery of the infrastructure and the fixed wireless broadband service to deliver the 80% community coverage target. This requires the consent and construction of 154 new fibre-connected telecommunication towers in rural New Zealand and the upgrading of 387 existing Vodafone facilities. Vodafone will achieve broadband coverage to 83% of rural New Zealand as well as increase mobile coverage over 4500kms of tier 2 roads. The facility near Karamea is one of the 154 new RBI towers.

Vodafone is required to identify suitable tower sites, gain lease agreements, gain all regulatory approvals, build the open access towers and equip them with technology to deliver the fixed wireless broadband service. Vodafone is also responsible for managing tower co-location for other mobile and wifi operators as well as developing a wholesale service for the telecommunications industry to provide the fixed wireless broadband service.

For the predicted coverage for rural broadband from the site please go to http://www.vodafone.co.nz/broadband/rural/ and check on the address checker. This website also details the current wireless broadband plans which people may be interested in checking out. Coverage can be affected by ridge lines and vegetation so it is best to check out the broadband coverage via the checker.

Mobile coverage will be slightly different from the wireless broadband coverage and that is because of the receiving device. A mobile phone has a small internal antenna and requires a stronger signal than wireless broadband which uses a large external antenna mounted on the roof.

Telecom is co-locating on the tower and will also be providing mobile services.

We do hope we can switch the tower on well before November but as stated this is beyond our control.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards

Caitlin
