Thanks for the help!

Last week Karamea had its second public forum. The topic was Health and Well-Being for Our Elder Citizens. Given the potential changes proposed for our District Health Board I believe that it was a timely session. Our seniors are a treasure and a resource. They possess wisdom and perspective about our community and have contributed their fair share to the well-being of our region. Providing a forum, where all aspects of elderly care could be openly shared and discussed, was an important community exercise. I want to thank all those involved who shared information and discussed ideas with the attendees. Your participation contributed to the value of the public forum experience. Thanks. A brief review of the forum discussion will appear in the next Chronicle.

As I have mentioned before, these community forums are intended to nurture two-way communication through constructive dialogue in a socially safe setting. Communities like Karamea and Little Wanganui always benefit from open communication, dialogue, discussion and even debate! Topics for the forums come from the community, for the community. Therefore the more local involvement that the forums generate the better. It’s everyone’s chance to help one another. So if it’s a topic that interests you, come along, have your say, and hear what others think.

Communication

One of my key roles, as a community development coordinator, is to facilitate communication. In fact, it’s one of my favourite parts of the job. Which is why I am excited about our developing Community Website, due on-line in the near future (more on that in my next Chronicle article). Like the public forums, the community website will be a place for information to be shared and discussed. I hope that as many folk as possible will take advantage of both our community forums and the website, in the spirit of clear and updated communication for all of us.

I am also grateful for the opportunity to communicate through the Chronicle, another vital source of communication for our community and region.
